Some days call for a water hose over your shoulder. Others call for a bag that can slip into a larger suitcase or carry a laptop across town. The Arete 18 is interesting because it can change jobs, provided you understand what must come out first.
Water is part of this particular package
The black 3032001000 version includes a 1.5-litre Crux reservoir. That matters when comparing listings: a pack described as hydration compatible is not automatically a water system. Check the included components rather than assuming every regional Arete offer contains the same kit.
A light pack, not a heavy-load frame
CamelBak lists the current 3032-series pack at 350 grams, with compressible material and a breathable mesh harness. It is attractive for a modest day load or as a second bag on a trip. If you regularly carry dense equipment or want substantial hip-supported load transfer, look at a more structured hiking pack.
One sleeve, two different jobs
The maker says the sleeve can hold a laptop up to 15 inches after the reservoir is removed. That is an either-or arrangement, not a reason to store electronics beside a full water bladder. Check your laptop’s actual dimensions and the protection you require before making it a work bag.
The details you will reach for
A secure phone pocket, side stretch pockets and an adjustable sternum strap are useful when essentials need a predictable place. Pack and adjust it with the load you intend to carry; a light empty bag is not proof of comfort once filled. Clean and dry the water system following its instructions.
Choose the Arete for light hikes, travel and a flexible backup bag. Skip it if you need serious load support, guaranteed laptop protection or water capacity beyond this kit. The appeal is fewer specialised bags to manage, not a promise that one simple pack does everything.
