The Kanken’s appeal is easy to see: a tidy rectangle, two handles and a front pocket that does not turn the bag into a wall of zippers. The Original 16L works best when your everyday load is equally straightforward. Buying it for the look is reasonable; expecting a technical carrying system is where disappointment starts.
Why the wide opening matters
The zip opens much of the front, so a notebook or folded layer is easier to reach without excavating a narrow top-loading bag. The Black F23510 selected here is the classic Vinylon F version, not the Mini, No. 2 or a dedicated Laptop model. Its roughly 300-gram empty weight suits a light daily collection rather than an excuse to overfill it.

Pack the items you genuinely carry most days: book, small lunch, wallet and a layer. Keep heavy objects close to the back and check whether bottles fit the flat side pockets. A bottle being small in volume does not mean its diameter will fit.

The seat pad is not a computer sleeve
A removable foam pad sits against the back and can come out for a short seated break. That is a charming, useful detail, but it is not the same as a protected laptop compartment. For electronics, add a suitable sleeve and check the opening, corners and bottom protection. If a laptop is the main reason for buying the bag, compare the dedicated Kanken Laptop range instead.

Keep the load honest
The slender shoulder straps are simple, not a hiking harness. A heavily loaded commute may call for wider padded straps and more support. The fabric resists wetness, but the bag is not waterproof: sensitive contents still need protection. Follow the maker’s gentle cleaning instructions rather than throwing it into a washing machine.

Choose the Original for uncomplicated daily carry with a distinctive shape. Skip it for heavy books, a large computer or long hikes. A bag that looks this clean is most enjoyable when you let it stay light.
