Buy it for the bowl, not the occasional cherry
Removing pits becomes a chore when you are preparing a dessert or a full bowl of fruit. OXO’s handheld pitter provides a fruit holder, a nonslip grip and a removable splash shield. It also locks closed for storage, a useful detail for a tool used only at certain times of year.

The shield is worth noticing before the shiny metal: it addresses the mess around the work area. It is not proof that no juice escapes. Work over a container or washable surface and inspect the fruit afterward instead of assuming every pit has been removed.

Seasonal usefulness has a storage cost
This is a good candidate for repeated cherry preparation or pitting suitable olives. It is less compelling when you normally buy prepared fruit or use only a few cherries at a time. OXO lists dishwasher cleaning, with the splash shield removable for access. Keep it with the tools you will actually remember during cherry season. The right buying question is how often you face the task and how much cleanup it creates, not whether a single-purpose gadget can claim to save seconds.

The decision before checkout
The catcher surface still matters: place a bowl beneath the fruit and protect clothing from juice. Inspect each prepared piece for retained pits. A splash shield and a locking handle improve the setup and storage, but neither proves every fruit is pit-free or every surface stays spotless.
