The five-clove dinner test
If you mince one clove occasionally, a knife is already paid for and easy to rinse. A dedicated press starts to make sense when garlic is a weeknight default and you want to move several cloves straight into a pan. OXO says this hopper can hold multiple cloves; the image of the open basket is more informative than a vague claim of “easy prep.”

Squeezing is only half the job
The stainless basket swings open for emptying. Pressed garlic still sticks to holes, so the real decision is whether the faster squeeze outweighs clearing the plate afterward. OXO lists the tool as dishwasher-safe, but a quick rinse before food dries is still sensible. Anyone with painful grip or limited hand strength should judge handle comfort in person; soft grips do not remove the force requirement.

When the knife wins
A knife gives you direct control over coarse versus fine pieces and avoids another object in the drawer. For roasted or very soft garlic, a fork or spoon may be enough. The OXO press is a worthwhile specialist when repeat chopping is the nuisance—not an automatic upgrade for every kitchen. Compare the exact stainless model at the retailer; older OXO press designs can look similar.

Our bottom line
Large hopper can reduce repeat loading when a recipe needs several cloves. But a press still leaves pulp in the holes and needs cleaning after use. Check the exact variant and current terms at the retailer. This is desk research, not a hands-on test.
