Not every desk object needs to improve productivity. Sometimes the attraction is simply watching something unexpected happen. Kikkerland’s ST05 Magnetic Hourglass turns falling iron powder into tiny, spiky formations above its wooden base. It offers an approximately one-minute spectacle, not an hour-long countdown—and its fragile construction deserves more thought than the dramatic photograph suggests.
Buy it for the changing shapes
The combination of iron powder and a magnet creates the visual effect. A beechwood base supports the borosilicate-glass body, so the appeal is quite different from a plastic timer or a screen animation. It is something to observe rather than another notification to respond to.

The maker describes roughly one minute of flow. That is suitable for a short visual pause, but we would not choose it for cooking, medication, timed assessments or any task requiring verified accuracy. Nor have we measured timing or independently tested the durability.

The base warning is part of the purchase decision
Kikkerland’s care instructions explicitly warn against placing the hourglass on the magnetic base when the lower chamber is already full, because that can break the glass. Read and follow the supplied handling directions rather than improvising around that warning.
Inspect the glass on arrival for cracks or chips and do not use it if damaged. Turn it carefully. If an object that needs this handling would be inconvenient on your desk, a less fragile decorative piece is the better choice. Borosilicate glass should not be mistaken for unbreakable glass.
Give it a safe, stable place
At about 16.5 centimetres tall, it needs a location away from a keyboard’s busiest edge and accidental knocks. Keep the small magnet components away from children and pets; this is not a suitable loose toy or hands-on fidget for someone likely to drop it or put parts in their mouth.
The maker scene shows other decorative objects to illustrate scale and atmosphere. Those are not included with the hourglass and magnetic base.
Choose it for an adult who enjoys unusual physical effects and is comfortable following the care instructions. Skip it for a hectic shared table, a children’s play area or a precision-timing need. Its strongest reason to exist is modest and appealing: one small changing landscape, right beside an otherwise ordinary workday.
