A retro desk can look carefully assembled until an anonymous black mouse lands beside it. The 8BitDo Retro R8 N Edition solves that visual mismatch with grey surfaces, red side buttons and a matching angled dock. It is a practical peripheral with a very deliberate personality—not a requirement to buy the matching keyboard.
The dock completes the picture
The included dock gives the mouse a visible place to return to and holds the wireless adapter when it is stored. The maker also describes the dock as a receiver signal extension. Leave room for its cable and base; the tidy photograph does not make the dock wireless.

The N Edition shown here is different from the brown C64 and translucent Xbox variants. Matching keyboards in lifestyle photographs are sold separately. If you already enjoy a grey-and-red desk palette, this particular edition is the relevant one.

Symmetry comes with a different feel
There are side buttons on both sides and a left/right-hand mode choice. That is useful to know, but a symmetrical outline does not guarantee comfort for every hand. Inspect the narrow shape, angular sides and button positions before choosing it over a rounded ergonomic mouse. The stated mouse weight is about 77 grams.

The dock is especially appealing if you want charging to become an end-of-day habit. It is less useful if you mainly need a minimal travel kit and would leave the extra base at home.

Do not confuse wired and wireless figures
The manufacturer’s specification separates the modes: up to 4K polling over the 2.4 GHz connection, up to 8K wired, and 125 Hz over Bluetooth. Configuration uses 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on a compatible computer. Those are different arrangements, not interchangeable headline numbers.

Choose the Retro R8 because its appearance, dock routine and controls suit your desk. Skip it if you need a silent office mouse, a wide sculpted thumb support or an extremely low-weight competition model. We have reviewed the specifications and photographs, not personally tested the switches or tracking.
